A BRIEF GLIMPSE

  • at one point in time ancient fae'ailoa was the unspoken capital of the galaxy; no other civilization could compare when it came to their technological and social advances, and their decadence was legendary, sea jewels decorating the long-revered water nautical planet. originally they lived above above ground on a slew of island-like rocks floating above the water. each was made of rocky terrain, with the fae people building their homes of stone and gemstone alike to climb further into the sky, all of which featuring a ladder to the depths of the sea below so they could pilfer and enjoy the water as much as they pleased. nights under the purple sky, blue clouds and light bugs guiding them home on the rare occassion they left the main city. they'd advanced in culture, education, technology, and understanding at a rate that were only possible with their isolation and lack of distractions -- no war, no poverty, just opening whatever curiosity door they could find.

  • it only took a small slew of natural disasters to shift this dynamic, the land sinking closer and closer to sea level at an alarming rate, until the fae people were permanently forced to take refuge underwater and rebuild their civilization there since no surface area survived. most of their more advanced technology didn't make the transition, and although there were a number of bioluminescent replacements for things like lights and some electricity, most creature comforts were sacrificed in the name of survival. all advancements, which were their previous main goal and sole focus, ceased the moment they become a subaqueous society.
  • RACIALLY

  • the fae, a race of creatures who were both delicate and fierce in equal amounts, were an alien species born with three distinct advantages: gills so they could explore underwater and above at their will, sonar and soundwave manipulation and persuasian, and the ability to camoflauge and stealth to blend in with their surroundings. after hundreds of years of living under the surface of the ocean their shifting abilities advanced, allowing them to camoflauge not only while they were still but as they moved as well, with their body heat signature hidden due to the colder temperature of the water. shifting too often or too extreme (i.e. trying to shift into something that isn't around you, attempting to create a camoflauge that doesn't exist) will cause the fae in question to suffer a severe physical reaction, possibly death if continued before they heal. the camoflauge can also be triggered by a fae against their will, in times of serious stress or duress, without the ability to change back until they calm and concentrate on it. some fae took special time to advance these techniques and become closer to vo'lem'e -- the water spirits that, they thought, allowed them such abilities since they hadn't manifested or advanced until they were fully submerged. others preferred to study marine life and science, hoping to get them back to where they were pre-submergence.

  • thankfully their new genetic mutations helped with a problem they'd never had on land, dealing with the horrifying and deadly creatures that lived well into the depths of the sea, and more often than not didn't appreciate their territory being invaded by the homeless society. although the fae had ruled the land above with little to no competition when it came to the food chain, the water was an entirely different story. unsurprisingly they were unprepared and suffered even more casualties in their first few years down below, their reign of peace and soveirgnty making them ill-equipped for battle. because of this they chose to develop something they never needed, a strict and fierce army that boasted only the elite among them. those who could camo-shift well enough to hunt, scout, or sneak attack, along with those that had extreme dexterity and grace, made the best candidates for the job.

  • a call to arms was raised across the board, petitioning all fit men, women, and even children if they were so inclined, to participate in the training process for the royal ar'eme'e. only the best of the best were chosen with the first half placed to guard the capital grounds, while the rest were sent out to explore the local land and wildlife, careful not to disturb anyone who wasn't aware of their presence yet. much to their relief there were no other humanoid beings inhabiting the water, and until the black hole their only threat came from the things lurking with them down below.
